I think it’s safe to say that for the most part, all of us think vanity plates are pretty obnoxious, with only a few exceptions. For example - if I got my hands on a Pontiac G8 and did the HSV body panel swap, I’d totally get a plate that read “DWN UNDR.” So oppo, what’s your exception to the no vanity plates rule?
![]() 05/10/2016 at 14:56 |

Charlie’s going to get a DAYMAN one if available.
![]() 05/10/2016 at 14:58 |

I find inside jokes and other things only people into a certain car know acceptable. Like what you suggested with dwn undr, or a chassis/engine code for instance.
![]() 05/10/2016 at 14:58 |

If they’re funny but not obnoxious, then it’s cool. If it’s something like your name or initials, it’s just lame.

if it’s something I can’t figure out when you’re in front of me - no.
Down Under I can translate, and even better it’s a good reference.
I personally recommend KANGROO or KOALACAR
![]() 05/10/2016 at 15:01 |

I would say that most people have to be able to understand it. For example, if you had a 2003 M3 and you get the tag “E46,” most probably won’t understand it.

I like clever ones. I84RE on a Lambo. I8TOKYO on a GTR. MPGLOL on a Viper.
![]() 05/10/2016 at 15:01 |

Absolutely. I’d totally rock an older BMW with “M30B35" or something like that
![]() 05/10/2016 at 15:02 |

My personal rules are 1. It shouldn't refer to the owner(s), but only the car, 2. It must be unique/clever/appropriate and 3. Nothing dirty or hateful, etc. So “DWN UNDR” is a good choice. How about “G8KEEPR” or “OZ WZRD”? (Yeah, those sorta refer to you, but mostly to the car)
![]() 05/10/2016 at 15:02 |

When I had my Orange Challenger I wanted to get “NO PULP” The only reason I never got it is because vanity plates are actually pretty expensive in Alberta.
![]() 05/10/2016 at 15:02 |

I might get “pass me” on the Tercel. It's faster than cranking the window down to wave people by.
![]() 05/10/2016 at 15:03 |

lol yea g8keepr is a good one, if the pontiac badges were still present

OPPO EXAMPLE:
“CAMERO” on a Mustang
![]() 05/10/2016 at 15:04 |

that’s the thing though - it’s kinda awesome if normal people have no idea you have a vanity plate, like an engine/chassis code.
![]() 05/10/2016 at 15:04 |

No vanity plate rule? Screw that.
SL600 for the SL
HEMIWGN for the HEMIWagon

I got a Georgia Tech one on the M3, cause “E90 M3" was taken

hahaha no pulp... that’s funny.
![]() 05/10/2016 at 15:04 |

I’ve really considered getting “376 CI” on my plates. Tricky wording always seems kinda douchey.
![]() 05/10/2016 at 15:05 |
|
My only rule: People should be able to understand it. If it just looks like random letters what’s the point?
I have a vanity plate, so obviously I’m okay with them. Mine is ‘CAMERO’ on my 2015 Mustang
![]() 05/10/2016 at 15:05 |

the GTR one is brilliant.

The only acceptable vanity plate around here.

I had a Euro plate on the front of my old Passat that said VITAMNB5 (for the B5 chassis). It was more hassle than it was worth — I had to explain it to 5 people for every person who waved or gave a thumbs up.
![]() 05/10/2016 at 15:08 |
|
But then you’d have to explain it. Although I’d love to see the plate “phere” on a Lancia Stratos.
![]() 05/10/2016 at 15:08 |

That’s a good point, however I never really liked the overly clear ones like LAMBO or something like that
![]() 05/10/2016 at 15:09 |

Personally, I’m a fan of self-deprecating humor. ;)
My rule is pretty much just make it fun/funny. The best ways to do that are be humble and poke fun at yourself (meaning your car), or reference an automotive rivalry (like an M3 with “LOL AMG” or Evo with “SUBAWHO”).
The plates that are automatically out are bragging ones, like “FAST EVO” or “FLY MERC.” Crap like that is douchey.

I got WT&NRDY (White & Nerdy) on my RT4WD Civic wagon just for fun, and because vanity plates are cheap in Maine where I lived at the time. The Weird Al song by the same name describes me pretty well. The wagon was also pretty dorky looking, especially after I added rally lights and fake Mini Cooper S style hood stripes.
Aside from that, the only special plates I’ve ever gotten have been my amateur radio callsign. And technically, in MA, that’s not a vanity plate - it’s a classification all its own.
![]() 05/10/2016 at 15:11 |

I have one that’s a pretty obscure reference to the pretty obscure music I listen to. Come at me.
![]() 05/10/2016 at 15:17 |

Agree completely. REDBULL or ILLTORO would at least be a notch better.
![]() 05/10/2016 at 15:17 |

You’re in MA too? Cool

wait seriously? that’s amazing, I bet mustang AND camaro bros hate it lol

I know what plate I’m getting on my Stratos now.
![]() 05/10/2016 at 15:21 |

Since I had the idea, can I drive your Stratos?
![]() 05/10/2016 at 15:21 |

Cool! I kinda want to organize an Oppo meet this Summer. That’d be fun, maybe gather some local NH/CT/RI/?? people, head to a car show of some sort, and get lunch + a few beers after? Depends on the number of people who’d be down for that I guess

On my first avant I had S4vant. Cause it was an S4 Avant, a rocket ship of a wagon that played well on the savant concept. Especially since I kept it unassuming on the outside.

My favorite definitely was a corvette an autox with the plate “CPT SLOW”. Often seems that corvettes have really cheesey ones though. I eventually would like a vanity plate that reads CONESSS for my Miata. With whatever number of S at the end to make it available. I also just saw this one that I really want now:
![]() 05/10/2016 at 15:26 |

I’d be down with that! There’s a meet and cruise to Factory Five coming up in a couple of weeks, but I can’t find the link to it right now or I’d put it here.

![]() 05/10/2016 at 15:28 |

yeah silly/fun plates are always OK IMO!
![]() 05/10/2016 at 15:29 |

Do you like Kirk or do you like Picard?
![]() 05/10/2016 at 15:29 |

Sure.
It’ll probably be a kit car, unless I somehow become independently wealthy in the next few years.
![]() 05/10/2016 at 15:29 |

hmm that’s an option! ideally we’d do something later in the day so people don’t have to get up stupid early to drive - that sucks tho because I’m pretty sure that eliminates the best regular shows in the area AKA Larz Anderson lawn events

mine is kinda pretentious but I made an exception for myself. It’s just
VR4-741, because my car is a VR4 number 741/2000.

To anyone who says that most musicians don’t get better over time, I submit Weird Al. The wife and I are thinking about going to see him live next month. He’s the musician I’ve listened to for the longest time in my life, starting around age 8 with Dr. Demento. The wife isn't far behind me.
![]() 05/10/2016 at 15:38 |

Well since wrecked Dinos are so common, it shouldn’t be a problem sourcing one.
![]() 05/10/2016 at 15:39 |

The reaction has mostly been laughter. People (including myself) think it’s funny
![]() 05/10/2016 at 15:40 |

Yeah, I agree. What I mean is, there’s already a Factory Five visit being organized here on Oppo. That’s why I wish I could find the thread, but my Google Fu is failing me today.
Stupid early sucks, I agree. That also rules out autocross or most track events. Though we could maybe do a meet at a Track Night In America event. Relatively cheap track time for those who want it, and those who don’t drive on track still get in for free and get to hang out and spectate.
![]() 05/10/2016 at 15:40 |

“SUBT1LE” on my Camero as well

Or another idea completely, make a resto-mod Stratos and use the engine from the 4C.
![]() 05/10/2016 at 15:48 |

But having to explain it is half the fun!
![]() 05/10/2016 at 15:49 |

Nah.
![]() 05/10/2016 at 15:50 |

Is it? I don’t know because I don’t have one. I might consider “5VZ” or “2Rnnr”

Heh.
![]() 05/10/2016 at 15:52 |

Yeah, I mean whats more fun then forcing/tricking your non enthusiast friends into car talk?
![]() 05/10/2016 at 15:54 |

I’m pretty sure they’re sick of me trying to get them interested in cars.
![]() 05/10/2016 at 15:54 |

meh, not enough entendres, but maybe i’ll change the ones on the S6 avant. Right now I run ESSSIX, I couldnt get any clever-er. Or I was still devastated about loosing the B5...
When the b5 was totaled I had a few people ask me if they could take my plate. I told them no, cause they’d just be copy cats, plus I used that as a hash tag for all my pictures on the gram. (not sure if they listened or not, since I dont fallow the B5 comunity anymore.)

Yea, I’m no longer sour about it, the C4 S6 is a blast, and pushes all the right buttons. I would like to get another, but mainly cause I love that motor, and I know so much about it, I got to put that info to work. lol

I have “M5J X51" on my 911 because it doesn’t look like a vanity plate but real Porsche enthusiasts know exactly what it means.
